Enchantment by @GuyKawasaki

Enchantment-cover
I was asked to review this enchanting book from Guy Kawasaki.  The subtitle gives you the real flavor: The art of changing hearts, minds, and actions.

You need to know how enchantment works and apply that to create an organization that will  flourish. The benefits are then available for all stakeholders (not only the shareholders).

It is really a book which totally is in line with my ProPer philosophy, i.e. to be successful you need to address  PROfessional (e.g. usage of technology)  as well as PERsonal (likeability; how to enchant your employees) aspects. In a very clear and concise way it is explained how you can create an enchanting (and thus a ProPer) organization.

By the way, here is a test to check how enchanting you are, right now --most people score in the low teens http://great.guykawasaki.com/

When you enchant people, your goal is to fill them with great delight. That is exactly the only real differentiator: delighting your customers!

Extensively it is described how you can create trust. I would say that trust is today’s most important currency. Nothing will work without trust.

For this book, Guy has consulted approximately twenty books about influence and persuasion, from Dale Carnegie to Robert Cialdini. So, it is not really one book, it offers knowledge and experience from many sources, and is more like a three-in-one book.

It covers:

-      How to launch/start up an organization

-      How to build lasting relationships

-      How to (ProPerly) use new technologies

I really loved this description:

“There are two kinds of people and organizations in the world: eaters and bakers. Eaters want a bigger slice of an existing pie; bakers want to make a bigger pie. Eaters think that if they win, you lose, and if you win, they lose. Bakers think that everyone can win with a bigger pie.”

How can you create a bigger pie? The key to enchantment is a great cause. Guy provides this list of qualities for great products and great services:

-      Deep

-      Intelligent

-      Complete

-      Empowering

-      Elegant

So, this book is a really the handbook for the 21st century entrepreneur. Read it and apply it!
